001: Are you living according to your values?

Values…

What are your values? Are you living according to them? Why does it matter, and how can you best make room in your life for the things that matter to you the most?

It’s all too common to get caught up in the game of life, and forget to stop and consider why we do the things we do. Between working as a naturopath, my work as a research assistant and completing my MSc studies, time is scarce. I know I should be “making time for the things that are important to me” but honestly, the things I thought were important to me five years ago just aren’t the things high up on my priority list any longer.

This realisation that I am not spending my time doing things that make me happy was quite startling for me. That is why I decided it was time for a “life makeover”, I needed to take the time to figure out what matters most to me NOW, and figure out how to incorporate more of that into my life. That’s what this episode is all about!

So how do you start recognising what is important for you? Take a moment to identify what are the things that important to you, what are your unique qualities?  Are you driven by accomplishment? Adventure? Financial security? Excellence? Family? Friendship? Health? Leadership? Nature? These values change over the years! In my teen years for sure my core values were friendship and adventure, and for now, I think kindness and creativity are more important to me. For Nava, it’s more about family, leadership and legacy. It’s not only okay to change over the years, it’ll happen whether you like it or not! That means it’s up to you to ensure you’re making time for the things that are most important to you now.

Figuring out what is important to you is the first step towards living it. Now you can figure out what are the changes you can make to incorporate the things that are important to you. If you value impact more than anything else, what are you going to create that will impact others? Who are you going to impact? How can you provide value to others in order to impact them? Take the time to think about what you want to do, and how you can accomplish it. Don’t let inertia be the leading force in your life, that’s a job you need to have!
