We all know the old saying: Knowledge is power! Most of us even agree with it.
But what if you’re not “the studying type”?
Maya is 100% your traditional nerd – when something catches her interest she’ll go find a book, or a course, or both and immerse herself in the subject. Nava, on the other hand, won’t go for any of those options, she’s more of an autodidact and will figure it out herself, or join a discussion about it.
Each person has a different route to take when it comes to educating themselves, and there’s no one size fits all. You should never feel as though you can’t learn things if you’re not a book reader. You can absorb information in a way suits you, and no one method is better than another, because all people are different.
There are several types of learning: you can be an auditory or a visual learner, you may need hands-on experience, and it may take you a moment to find the right way for you. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not suited for formal education.
Today, degrees may well be less important than experience. Many leaders around the world are saying out loud today that they no longer hire based only on awarded degrees. James Altucher has been talking against higher education for years, and just today, an interesting article, noted how three-quarters of students in the UK won’t be able to pay off their student loans. That’s not to say formal education is redundant, it’s certainly not, but it’s also not the be-all end-all you may think it is either. There are so many ways to study, learn, and gain knowledge about the things you care about, the things you find interesting, and the things you need to know to be the best at your job that you can.
It’s also important to note that knowledge can empower you not only in terms of career, it’s about your daily life. Knowing yourself, and working to your own best advantages is also a huge deal in our opinions. Knowing yourself may well be the most important way of empowering yourself. When you figure that out, you can do anything you want to do, regardless of qualifications. If you want to learn something, higher education is NOT the only option, you can find a mentor, a book, an online course, watch lectures on YouTube, or there are so many other opportunities to learn whatever you want…
Here’s that funny video by JP Sears we spoke about (Maya remembered his name, eventually…) enjoy!
