007: Simple ways of improving your diet

You can't fix your health until you fix your diet
Listen to this episode

Improving our nutrition sounds like something really complicated, and which will require loads of work and learningĀ of new skills.

Today we discuss some really simple changes you can make to your diet, which won't turn your life upside down!

So how can we get out of the rut? How can we move forward from having our very limited selection of go-to recipes, and create more variety in our diets?

Well, if you're of the super organized variety, we highly recommend spending an hour or so once a week, planning out your weekly menu and the shopping list with everything you'll need.

Then you're pretty much set: you've got a plan and there's nothing to stop you or hold you back from that (well, you know, other than lifeā€¦)

But that's not right for everyone. Not everyone can be that organised. So another option we like is having a set day, once a week, when you know you're going to try a new recipe. That way you'll be varying your nutrition, and if you're lucky enough to find a great recipe that your family loves, you've now got a new go-to recipe, and worst case, you don't keep that one, but you've at least tried something new, you're out of your rut.

Put out a bowl of fresh, washed and ready to eat fruit, and watch how quickly that becomes the go to snack. If you're an advanced hustler like Auntie Maya, you can also try replacing the nosh drawer (or cupboard) with healthier snacks like dried fruits and nuts (depending on the age of the children, obviously!) and you may also find that that can satisfy hungry children. When you or your kids get home from school or work, cut up a few pieces of fruit and just put them on the table, if they're there, they'll get eaten!

Reduce (or completely avoid) buying sugary drinks, reduce the amount of "mindless" sugar you have during the day, like sugar in your coffee or tea. And when we say avoid, we DO NOT mean switch to artificial sweeteners, we mean just reduce the excess where you can. You can find an easy compromise that works for you, be it only having water in the house, or only

You can find an easy compromise that works for you, be it only having water in the house, or only getting one bottle instead of two, or only getting sugary drinks as a treat or really, whatever works for you- anything you can do is a step towards better health.

Add a salad, or cut vegetables, with every meal. If they're on the table and looking appetising, both you and your kids will be having more of them! This way you're adding fibre, you're adding vitamins and minerals, and you're adding loads of antioxidants!

Please do let us know what's working for you, if you have any more brilliant suggestions, and what successes you've had!
